14 Days of DMB - Countdown to West Palm - "#41" 12.19.98 - United Center, Chicago

I'll be running a DMB live perormance or video for the next two weeks before I take off for the two DMB West Palm-FL shows. Today, I present my favorite DMB song (studio or live), "#41" a meandering, beautiful piece that is, ostensibly, about the band's long-time manager finally being shown the door. Among fans, the song is a favorite because of impromptu solos that tend to accompy two thirds of its performance (after the first few notes are struck in any live recording, they are followed by a crowd roar).

In this clip, noted bassist Victor Wooten joined the band and gives just such a solo. In person, I've seen the song performed live twice, the Houston performance in May of 09 being my favorite. The most in/famous performance of the song came with galactically talented banjoist Bela Fleck joined DMB on 4.20.02 in Ontario for a performance of the song that lasted, I kid you not, 32 minutes. For people who love the song and its jazz fusion sensibilities, this is heaven. For those who do not, I assume it was hell. Either way, it's my favorite version of the song. Enjoy!
